VDAS Victorian Digital Engineering Education Map

To enable the delivery of our Digital Engineering assets through the Victorian Digital Asset Strategy (VDAS), the Office of Victorian Chief Engineer provides a detailed list of education providers of Digital Engineering across the state.

The VDAS Victorian Digital Engineering Education Map will support the Victorian Government's efforts to deliver Digital Engineering benefits to the state. The Education Map is aimed at a range of stakeholders that are responsible for Victorian Government assets, both during asset creation, as well as asset maintenance and operations. 

Education offerings are available across a range of modes, and interaction methods, including Informal Online Courses, TAFE or Short-Courses, Single Unit courses as part of Undergraduate or Postgraduate degrees, as well as courses provided by external providers.

For each of the offerings, information about cost, delivery, duration, certification, pre-requisites, content, and target audience are provided. Where available a link to the provider’s website is provided.

Prior to embarking on any Digital Engineering education, you must consider your current situation and the provider’s entry requirements. This may include availability, time-commitments, cost, resources, syllabus requirements, and/or location and accessibility.

Informal Online Courses provide students the opportunity to boost their Digital Engineering (DE) skills in a relaxed environment with a relatively flexible commitment and load.

TAFE courses are an ideal source of learning based on an applied and industry-based education framework. TAFE courses are very accessible to a wide-range of potential students and are inexpensive for the learning, education, and skills development provided.

Most TAFE courses are financially accessible with some supported by generous State Government subsidies.

Like Informal Online Courses, TAFE Courses are easily accessible to those that are currently working, have few prerequisites, and often available on weekends and weekdays.

On 15 August 2018, Victorian Government committed to Free TAFE courses in BIM.

Course currently in development.
Graduates of these courses, currently in development, will be able to manage complex information across teams involving architects, building designers, engineers, contractors and specialist contractors, facilities managers and trades.

Units from Undergraduate and Postgraduate Courses

Digital Engineering and BIM is increasingly being taught and integrated into undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This means that Victoria’s future workforce is likely to be VDAS-ready upon entry to the workforce.

Many education institutions also allow individuals to complete an individual ‘unit’ of study (often termed ‘non-award’) as part of the wider undergraduate or postgraduate course.

Each unit is typically available for a standard semester (around 13 weeks) and includes assignments, exams, literature reviews, and group presentations.

These non-award units often incur an upfront cost and are not supported by Federal Government subsidies. Completion of many of these units may act as a credit to a wider course or degree.  Office of Victorian Chief Engineer recommend that potential students contact the relevant education institution for more information on the unit and applicability for them to enrol.

Externally Provided Courses

Private industry is recognising the importance of DE and BIM in Victoria. Many of these external education providers offer solutions that can be tailored to individual’s needs.

These Externally Provided Courses are often more expensive than TAFE Courses but can often provide greater insight into a wider-range of DE topics, such as workforce alignment, management, contracting, standards, and change management. Many of the External Providers will also tailor courses and will provide generous discounts for multiple students or in-house training.
